ibl Don developed a sidewall contour that gave a great polar pattern for a wide range of frequencies. At what axis do they sum best, and is that where you want them to sum best? They took a vertical cross section 44330 for exponential area growth and rotated this cross section around an apex back in the throat in effect a radial swing. Measured in this way most of the JBL compression drivers would have flat response from several hundred Hz to about 3kHz.

This is just my opinion and I do realize that a lot of great JBL speakers were designed contrary to this. There are 3 items available. I came to JBL in September of I’d want to know that the drivers are original and untampered.
Altec made thinly veiled copies with their jbbl Ray” horns. Studios typically build their main monitors into soffets over the control window and the was just too big.
I remember that there was a lot of work to get the midrange and jb controls to work sensibly. These had been flown when they were in use and as such, the grills are screwed on to the speaker, so I didn’t get a chance to check and see if the woofers would need a re-foaming.
They ended up being made in fiberglass with reinforcement panels molded in. I will be happy to provide any more information that is needed, to the best of my ability.
