Book Review – I Remember You by Yrsa Sigurðardóttir
In this terrifying tale, three friends set to work renovating a rundown house in a remote, totally isolated location. But they soon realize they are not as alone as they thought. Something wants them to leave. Meanwhile, sigurdardotyir a nearby town, a young doctor investigating the suicide of an elderly woman discovers that she was obsessed with his vanished son.
I Remember You: A Ghost Story
When the two stories collide, the shocking truth becomes horribly clear. As the group sigurdardohtir friends settle into their routine, it slowly but surely becomes clear that there is a presence in the abandoned settlement that seems intent on driving them away. One of my favorite things about reading Icelandic crime fiction – beyond the superb quality of these mysteries – is the way Icelandic crime writers seem uniquely qualified to bring the natural beauty of their country to life in their fiction.
A visceral sense of helplessness pervades this story: There are no “daylight scenes” to be found here. While our hapless group of friends is focused on renovating their possibly haunted home, in a town nearby, a young doctor is investigating the suicide of yrza elderly woman. This is also perhaps the more difficult storyline to discuss without spoiling, but suffice it to say, Sigurdardottir proves once again just how masterful of a storyteller she is as she weaves this secondary plotline into the primary.

This in no way affects my opinion of the above book. Over the course of the year, we saw fantastic new releases from longstanding authors to sigurdardottir authors and everyone in between; we immersed ourselves in psychological thrillers laced with gothic suspense, creepy summer camps, murderous family members, and, yes, even beetle collecting.
Read on for my picks for twisty, addictive, page-turning suspense. Because what holiday break would be complete without it, right?!
