The number of variations is larger than that of any other aria, and Aria Sebaldina is also the apolllnis one provided with a subtitle. Pachelbel wrote a short preface dated November 20,in which he dedicated the collection hexachorrum Dieterich Buxtehude and Ferdinand Tobias Richter and expresses a hope that his eldest son Wilhelm Hieronymus might study with one of them it is unknown whether this hope was realized. Welter’s translation is more elaborate: Harmonia Mundi promise a series of recordings featuring these instruments; on the strength of this first release, this is going to be a most impressive series.

The first five encompass the span of a perfect fifth but the sixth is something of an enigma; its home key deviates from the expected sequence forming the hexachord, it is in triple time while the others are in quadruple and it contains eight variations as against the five or six of the previous Arias.
