Great Story but I was extremely disappointed with the conclusion. Dec 30, Rhett Bruno rated it it was amazing. The writing was capable but not particularly inspired.

Unlike his brother who has led the empire to victory after victory, Dennison has yet still to prove himself, and he’s making a poor effort of it; he’s pessimistic, cynical, even aware that his own NCO’s don’t expect him to win, and he shows a casual attitude to proving them right.

Firstborn is of course one of Sanderson’s early writings. His moral may be that you have to work hard to be worthy of your destiny, but it’s still a destiny that was fkrstborn to you. This was so Star Trek -y, I loved it. This changed when an eighth grade teacher gave him Dragonsbane by Barbara Hambly. Secret Historyand a brand-new Stormlight Archive novella, Edgedancer. There were several twists to the story that really surprised me, firxtborn it was both fast paced and easy to jump into.
