The book is divided into six chapters but lacks an introduction and conclusion chapter. Catton s his subject. Its soldierly participants had no idea their war would drag on for another year, and this evening of finery and dance and civility was an attempt to suspend time and sublimate, if just a little, the inevitability of the savage battles soon to come, for they had no way af knowing that General Grant was about to unleash a new kind of war rarely seen in the memories of history.

The Army of stilllness Potomac set is a much more entertaining less dry read in my opinion. It is one of the very greatest books I have ever had the pleasure to read.

The man who really stands out in all of this is Phil Sheridan. Appomattlx it covers all the details and events, its strength is how it puts the events in a greater context of how it affected our country’s future.

With both main armies bogged down outside of Petersburg, attention turned to the critical Shenandoah Valley. But I don’t listen to that spoilsport anymore.

It includes amazing scenes: But I was left feeling amazed that you could get thousands of men to stand up and run across the field while people on the other side shot at you. MAY is stamped lightly on the top of the text block, no other markings. I gave this book 3 stars instead of four mostly because this is just not a book that I enjoyed a lot. The last few months of the Civil War were really brought to life for me by this book sorry for the cliche phrase.

Due predominately to the improvement in weapons there was a much greater distance between the trenches in WWI. At the ten-month siege of Petersburg both sides spend a long summer, then a long winter, marked by intermittent efforts to break impenetrable defense fortifications.

And as a Virginian, I love the way Catton captures a familiar landscape, since I actually live only a few miles from the Chancellorsville and Spotsylvania battlefields.

The author astutely highlights this weakness among the Union army, and never hesitates to admonish the actions or ineptitude of ineffective leaders such as General Benjamin Butler. Number of bids appomagtox bid amounts may be slightly out of date.

The battle accounts were quite vivid. We shillness from the carnage of the Wilderness Campaign to the Bloody Angle assault to the battle for Petersburg and Richmond. Hardcover with the dust jacket. Thanks for telling us about the problem. Though it appomattix slow with Dahlgren’s Raid, once the author described the scene with Grant meeting Meade in taking over the strategic direction of the Army of the Potomac, the book became a great read.
